Summary:
“Orphaned after a plane crash in Africa, two kids from Florida, 12-year-old Kelly and her 10-year-old brother, Jake, have to find their way out of the jungle. In the delirium resulting from her injuries, Kelly meets her spirit guide, a black leopard, who appears when she prays for someone, anyone, to help them. She doesn’t understand at first what he means when he tells her ‘Listen to your spirit’.
When two white men and two natives find them, the kids are relieved, but their excitement fades as they realize it is greed that motivates the white men who rescue them.
Mystery enshrouds their lives in South Africa before they learn the truth behind the misconceptions.
Simba, the black leopard, appears in several forms, helping Kelly find her destiny as she learns to listen to her spirit.”

Kevin S. Giles:
Another novel I read recently, aboard a plane en route to Australia, was Listen to Your Spirit by Kayo Fraser. Despite the juxtaposition of reading about a fallen plane while flying on one, which barely distracted me, I became invested in the plot early and finished with the hope that we all find a Simba in our lives.
I met Kayo in my hometown of Deer Lodge, Mont., where she’s a leader of historic preservation. It’s all the more fulfilling to read a novel by an author you know. Kayo’s novel took me on a journey through the eyes of her protagonist, Kelly. I greatly enjoyed Kayo’s book. At her request, I left her novel with friends in Australia. She can now say that Listen to Your Spirit is being read on two continents.

I’m not an expert on books for kids, but I just read my friend Kayo’s new book and thought it a good one. I think it had just enough suspense in it for its target audience, plus some words of wisdom thrown in to make the parents happy…. but not so much that the kids would roll their eyes.
Well done Kayo. I’m proud of you for your accomplishment.
I ordered my copy directly from Kayo, but I know it is also available on Amazon.com.

Received my friend’s book, grabbed a cold water, a bag of popcorn settled in to read…I found it very captivating from the first page to the last. Why did you wait so long to write this and when can we expect the second book? I loved it, so proud of you.
