Photography has been my passion since I was just a kid. I won a Kodak camera in a limbo contest when I was a teenager (a very long time ago) and have been hooked on taking pictures ever since. After high school I worked for a company as a traveling portrait baby photographer working in most towns from New York to Colorado. I bought my first 35mm camera at a sporting goods store, it was used but relatively new. Eventually it was time to seek a new adventure – and I decided to study photography in more depth. I attended the first year of a two year course in Photography at Daytona Beach Junior College in Florida. The first year was on black and white photography. To help with my living expenses, I worked at one of the famous beach side Hotels selling Polaroids to the visitors. When the school year was over, I decided to go back to the mountains and traveled to Colorado where I lived in Lenado, what is now a ghost town near Aspen. I worked in the lumber camp for about three years and when the mill closed I hit the road again wanting to see Alaska – but I ran out of money in Sandpoint, Idaho where I got a job in electronics.
I loved photography but I didn’t love making a living at it. I was an adventurer at heart and not very traditional – so as I traveled I experienced some very interesting jobs. I always took pictures of the places where I lived and the sights I saw. I guess I am still more of a picture taker than a Photographer.
After I met and married Alex, a professional horseman, my life took on a new adventure. We lived in Sandpoint, Idaho for about 16 years then we moved to Montana in 1990. We eventually started a school to teach people how to drive horses. I used my passion and skills in photography to shoot pictures of the horses we offered for sale, and put these on our web site Fraser School of Driving and on the blog.
I loved working in the dark room but I really love digital photography even more. All I can say is Thank goodness for digital photography. Now I can shoot 30 or more photos of a horse in action and hope there will be one or two I could use for the web site. No longer did I have to rush to town to process the roll of film to see if any of them turned out. Digital photography may have made me a lazy photographer, but all I care about is what I see on my screen and what will print or be used in the pursuit of my passions and our businesses.
I have sold some of my equestrian photographs to Mischka Press who produces the nicest calendars for the Draft Horses, Driving Horses, Mules and Donkeys. I do love to see my photos in other places than in my own house. I took the photo below at the Big Sky Draft Horse Expo.
It is of Gerard Paagman and four of his Friesians putting on an exhibition in Deer Lodge, MT. These can be made into note cards or 8 x 10 photos.
He loved the photo too and bought the rights to use it in his advertising and on his trailer for Ideal Harness. The photo is on both sides of the trailer.
I love it! BTW – we sell this harness on our web site Fraser School of Driving
Guess I could tell a lot more about myself – but what’s the point?
My second passion is writing. I have written poetry, phoetry (which is a photo with free verse poetry), short stories, articles and now I have my first book published by Raven Publishing, Inc.
